Cliff Palace, Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado – Mesa Verde, a sprawling national park in the southwest, is characterised by the 600-plus cliff dwellings carved into its rocks. They were once home to ancestral Puebloan people, who are thought to have left their land by the 1300s after more than 700 years here.
