Arlington Cemetery, Virginia
Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia – This sprawling military cemetery in Virginia is most famous as the resting place of John F Kennedy: an eternal flame has burnt at the gravesite of the assassinated 35th president since 1963. More than 300,000 American service people are also buried here, honoured with simple white gravestones. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has become an especially moving symbol of the thousands of war dead who were never identified or recovered.
