Your First Group Ride: The Complete Checklist

Your first group ride is a rite of passage — and a little different from riding solo. Riding in a pack is safer and more fun when everyone knows the routine. Here’s exactly what to do before, during and after, so you turn up prepared and ride away with new friends.

Before you go

  • Check your bike. Tyres, oil, lights, chain and brakes — the classic T-CLOCS pre-ride check. Show up with a full tank.
  • Know the plan. Read the ride details: start point, departure time, route, fuel stops and final destination. Arrive 15 minutes early — groups leave on time.
  • Gear up properly. Helmet, gloves, jacket, boots and eye protection. Pack a bottle of water, your phone, and a card for fuel.
  • Fuel up first. Fill up the night before or on the way — nobody wants to wait while you top up at the meet point.
  • Say hello. Introduce yourself to the ride leader and mention it’s your first group ride. They’ll place you appropriately in the pack.

At the pre-ride briefing

Most groups gather for a quick briefing before rolling out. Listen for the route and stops, who’s leading and sweeping, the hand signals they use, and the formation. Ask where you should sit — as a newer rider you’ll usually be placed near the front, behind the leader, where the pace is easiest to read.

Riding in the pack

  • Ride staggered. The leader takes the left third of the lane, the next rider the right third, and so on — giving everyone space and time to react. Drop into single file for corners, narrow roads and hazards.
  • Keep your own space. Maintain roughly a two-second gap to the rider directly ahead of you (in your track), and about one second to the staggered rider beside you.
  • Ride your own ride. Never go faster than you’re comfortable with to keep up. A good group waits — that’s what the sweep rider is for.
  • Pass on hazards. Repeat the leader’s hand signals down the line so the message reaches the back.
  • No surprises. Signal early, brake smoothly and avoid sudden moves — the riders behind are reading you.

First group ride — FAQs

What should I bring on my first group ride?

Full riding gear (helmet, gloves, jacket, boots, eye protection), a full tank of fuel, water, your phone and a payment card. Do a quick pre-ride check of tyres, oil, lights, chain and brakes, and arrive 15 minutes early.

Where should a beginner ride in the group?

Usually near the front, just behind the ride leader, where the pace is steadiest and easiest to follow. Tell the leader it’s your first group ride and they’ll position you well.

What is staggered formation?

Riders alternate between the left and right thirds of the lane — leader on the left, next rider on the right, and so on — keeping safe spacing while staying compact. The group switches to single file for corners, narrow roads and hazards.

What if I can’t keep up?

Ride your own ride and never exceed your comfort level to keep pace. A well-run group rides to the ability of its members and uses a sweep rider at the back to make sure nobody gets left behind.
